Schmutzie's 100 Best Songs of 2022
The 100 Best Songs of 2022’s full playlist is 6 hours and 20 minutes long and spans 15 genres: alternative, R&B/soul, pop, rock, worldwide, indie rock, punk, singer/songwriter, jazz, Americana, pop latino, folk, electronic, east coast rap, and indie pop. This playlist is available on Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer (98 of 100 songs), and Tidal. The songs are listed in reverse alphabetical order by artist first names, except on Tidal where they defaulted to alphabetical order for some reason.
In other annual music roundups like this — in 2021, 2020, and 2019, for example — I have split my favourite songs into groups like louder/faster and quieter/slower, which created lists that were more equally balanced between aggressive and gentle vibes, but this year I decided to build my list through a different process. I started with 50 of my most listened to songs in 2022, and the other 50 were chosen based purely on what I like most, allowing for only one song per artist. What this has resulted in is a song list that’s a bit mellower than in previous years but one that is more representative of my tastes and listening habits.
Of all the songs on the following playlist, I’m singling out Sudan Archives’ “Selfish Soul” as the one with a video I keep coming back to because it’s so full of pride and self-love and joy and friends and butts:
